Reasons to Take a Cruise

#1: A cruise vacation is an excellent value.

Cruises provide excellent value for money because the fares include nearly everything you'll need for a fantastic vacation: food, lodging, daytime and evening entertainment, and transportation between travel destinations. We regularly see cruise deals on mainstream cruise lines for under $100 per person, per night, which is significantly less than the cost of a hotel, dinner, and a show on land.

Some cruise lines even allow children to sail for free or at a reduced rate when sharing a cabin with two adults. Looking for opulence? Upscale lines are even more inclusive, with alcoholic and nonalcoholic beverages, gratuities, shore excursions, onboard spending credits, and even flights frequently included in the base price.

#2: Visit Multiple Places, Unpack Only Once

On a cruise, you unpack once and your floating hotel transports you from city to city or island to island, eliminating the need to deal with train or ferry schedules or lug your suitcase through cobblestone streets. Every morning, you'll wake up in a different location. Having trouble deciding between St. Lucia and Barbados, or Italy and Spain? Why make a decision? Choose an itinerary that includes all of the cities on your wish list.

#3: Family-Friendly Cruise Ships

Family cruises are enjoyable for all ages, from toddlers to teenagers, grandparents to grandchildren. If you're looking for a vacation that your 5-, 10-, and 15-year-olds will enjoy as well as adult activities, cruise ships now have extensive kids' facilities divided by age. Teens have their own cool hangouts, separate from the children's play areas (and certainly a nice distance from parent-friendly pools and bars). How can you not enjoy a vacation that includes video games and swimming pools, as well as time for families to spend together at dinner or on shore excursions? Parents can even sneak in a romantic dinner alone by taking advantage of the kids' club's late-night hours.

#4: Cruise ships come in a variety of shapes and sizes.

A mega-ship outfitted with onboard rock-climbing walls and outdoor movie theaters may be ideal for one person, while another prefers an intimate ship with an upscale ambience, and yet another desires the seafaring experience of a masted tall sailing ship. Fortunately, all of those different kinds of cruise ships exist.

#5: Ships Provide a Wide Range of Onboard Activities

Today's cruise ships are built to please everyone. Want to go to the spa while your spouse goes to the casino? Alternatively, while your family is playing basketball, you can relax in the sun and read a book. You can attend an educational lecture, a wine tasting, a computer class, or a dance workshop; you can paint pottery, play bridge, learn a language, or do yoga; you can eat at a casual buffet, a fancy sit-down restaurant, a sushi bar, a diner, or a steakhouse; and you can watch a movie, a comedy routine, a song-and-dance show, or a live music performance. And if all you want to do is sit around and do nothing while the ship sails from port to port, you can do that as well.

#6: Cruise vacations are simple to organize.

Cruise vacations are simple to plan because they combine transportation and lodging. Choose your ship, itinerary, and cabin, and you're off — no searching for hotels within your budget, no coordinating travel between cities. You can even have your travel agent arrange your airfare – or choose a departure port that is within driving distance to avoid the extra planning step.

#7: Ships are essentially floating cities.

Relax if you're worried about becoming stranded in the middle of the ocean. Cruise ships are like floating cities, with everything you could want. Today's ships are outfitted with Wi-Fi, cell service, and satellite TV, allowing you to stay connected to the outside world while on board (if you even want to). Onboard shops sell toiletries that you forgot to pack, medical centers can provide medicine or doctor's services if necessary, and laundry facilities allow you to wash your clothes mid-cruise so you don't have to overpack. There are also fun amenities such as gyms, multiple restaurants, movie screens, spas, swimming pools, theaters, and discos. In the unlikely event of an emergency, there are always enough lifeboats to go around.

#8: Arrange for an Exotic Vacation

Have you always wanted to visit Asia but have been put off by the language barrier? Curious about the Middle East but concerned about local customs? A cruise is one of the most convenient ways to visit the world's most exotic and foreign destinations.

Itineraries include stops in major cities and picturesque villages, all of which are regional highlights, so you don't have to do your own research on the best places to visit in a new location. If you're not comfortable doing your own sightseeing in a new place, take a ship tour with English-speaking guides. Or, if you meet more experienced travelers online or onboard, you can share a cab or private guide.

#9: Cruising Is a Romantic Experience

Anyone who has seen "The Love Boat" knows that sea travel is romantic. The wind in your hair, the endless ocean views, and the stars twinkling above are all clichés, but they are real experiences onboard! If you want to rekindle the flame with your sweetie, a cruise vacation provides plenty of opportunities to spend time together, such as sharing side-by-side lounge chairs by the pool, a table for two at dinner, dancing in the evening, or spending quality time onshore. Onboard and ashore, cruise lines offer special packages for honeymoons, vow renewals, and weddings.

#10: Cruising is a social activity.

If you enjoy meeting people from all over the country – and the world – cruising is an excellent way to meet new people. Even before you set sail, you can meet other cruisers in the Roll Call forums of Cruise Critic and form groups to go on independent excursions. You'll meet people onboard at your dinner table, the piano bar, or by the pool. Your seatmate could be from Paris, Texas, or Paris, France; London, Ontario, or London, England. During youth activities, children can find playmates their own age, so they are not always with adults or their older or younger siblings. Are you looking for Mr. or Ms. Right? We have evidence that many long-term relationships begin during a cruise.
