Trawick International® has compiled a list of useful tips for students traveling abroad. Before traveling anywhere, especially internationally, students should become familiar with a variety of cultures, acceptable behaviors, geography, and other topics.
We hope these tips will help you on your journey, whether you are traveling to the United States from another country or traveling internationally from your home country! We are always interested in hearing about your student travel experiences abroad.
Discover Your Destination's Culture
Learn about the culture where you are traveling to avoid "culture shock" and to learn about areas to avoid that may be "seedy" or dark. It is best to learn the body language, iconography, phrases, and gestures of the culture you are visiting because they may be offensive or degrading in other cultures.

Drinking While Traveling Abroad
While traveling, keep your alcohol consumption to a minimum. The legal drinking age in most European countries is 18, but in others it is 16. Even if it is legal to drink in these countries, it is critical to remember to stay safe in foreign cities and locations. Avoid getting drunk while traveling because bad things can happen. If you do have a little too much to drink, have someone you trust drive you back to your hotel.
What to Bring
Pack only the necessities. Pack lightly and mix and match your clothes. Simply put, you will not require the wardrobe that you are accustomed to in America. Most people in most countries are not as concerned with wearing a different outfit every day. Packing only the essentials is really all you'll need. Make sure to bring a pocket guide, such as one from Hostel World.
Monitor the Weather
Investigate the weather in each region to which you intend to travel. Even in the summer, some areas are quite cold, and seasons differ from one side of the globe to the other. Understand the season and be prepared when you arrive. Download a popular weather app that will keep you up to date on current and forecast conditions.
